This Wasn't Among The Futures I Could Imagine

Not in a million years

I envisioned many potential futures in the past.

Utopian futures… Post-apocalyptic futures after nuclear wars… Apocalypses as described in different religions… Variants of alien invasions… First contact scenarios with alien civilizations… Scenarios in which humankind and alien civilizations exchanged representatives, did tourism, and even exchanged populations.

None of those theorizations could prepare me for the surreal future we are living in.

Not in a million years could I imagine that the future we are living in was probable.

Even the first contact with alien civilizations scenarios have a higher probability than the future we are living in having happened, because they depend on the technology of potential alien civilizations and not ours. They could happen anytime. A few years later. Or tomorrow, when one of them decides to make it happen.

But the future we are living in is far more surreal than anything else:

The American president is using the word ‘f*ck’ on live TV and going around slapping arbitrarily changing tariffs on every country on the planet, while he refuses to release pedophilia related files which suggest that he and many others in the US elite may have been implicated, despite promising to do it…

A rogue state is committing genocide on live video and making wedding songs out of it while debating in its parliament whether it is ok to rape the genocided, while its genocide causes entirely new statistical classifications to come into being…

The AI built by the tech world was supposed to change the world for good, is allowing profiteers to fire everyone ranging from accountants to lawyers to medical professionals and even the tech professionals who built it, empowering the profiteers to make those who remain work multiple times more…

The entire Western economy is at a standstill after the zero-interest free cash money tap gets closed when the dollar loses its reserve currency monopoly…

Corporations are obsessive-compulsively raising prices to make up for falling profits despite the contracting economy and the people not having money to buy things, even less, more expensive things…

Hunger, homelessness, which have become plagues even in a country like the US, are pushing even the wealthier Americans to emigrate to lower-cost-of-living countries to survive at the cost of gentrifying and colonizing the locals.

Instead of fixing this, the governments are allowing the ultra-rich to dump more imaginary wealth onto ballooned stocks and real estate to make things even worse and exacerbate the collapse.

The list goes on and on… With things that are as crazy as these or close to them…

We Are Living A Sh*tty, Sticky Collapse

This is societal collapse.

But not a clean, easy-to-understand one like the collapse of Rome.

It’s a sh*tty, sticky collapse that is like dragging oneself out of a knee-deep pool of mud while narcissistic sociopaths dump more mud into the pool because it makes them feel good.

You could understand an apocalyptic global nuclear war. It’s easy to understand.

You could even understand any of the apocalypse scenarios told by the religions. At least they have clear outlines.

But how can you understand people and even entire societies acting as if they are delirious lunatics?

How can you understand those who drop every fundamental humane norm we know in our modern civilization and go postal?

How can you understand those who obsessive-compulsively double down on what is obviously making their societies collapse, as if someone else will come and save them from the consequences of their choices?

Even further, how can you understand those who tell you that things are going good and talk like they live in an entirely alternate reality instead of the one they are in?

How can you interpret such a level of surreal thrashing around, a surreal denial of reality, stubborn insistence and even insults upon being presented with irrefutable proof that things are not as they claim?

It’s like an entire, large part of the world is like a lunatics’ asylum, where everyone else is trying to one-up the other in the level of lunacy that humankind can attain.
