When you look around, when you see all the problems and suffering in our modern society and notice that those who profit from suffering intend to keep things as they are, it does make you feel like you are powerless.
And for all intents and purposes, it does objectively seem to be true.
However…
There is a secret that’s hiding in broad daylight which changes everything and turns the tables in your favor:
Society is made up of its members and their actions. And when they change how they think and how they behave, everything changes.
Even better, research shows that only 10% of society needs to commit to an idea for it to become the dominant idea. And the key is remaining committed.
And it makes sense — just take a second and contemplate: Society is not a monolithic, fixed entity.
It is the sum of its members and the actions & choices of those members. Therefore it’s in a constant flux of change, changing every second as its members shape it with their choices and their actions.
All of the little and big choices which people make, cause society to go in the resulting direction of those collective choices.
A majority of people make selfish choices?
Society slowly moves in a selfish direction…
A majority of people make compassionate, harmonious choices?
Society slowly moves in a harmonious direction…
Even if a minority of 10% to 25% of people start making better choices and act in that direction, society will change in that direction.
Every member contributes to that change. Every single act, every little choice has an effect.
Which Means That You Really Can Change the World
Because you are a member of society and your choices & actions contribute to the way it's shaped like every other person’s choices & actions do.
Not only do the smaller and larger choices you make contribute to the change in society, but also they act as examples that motivate and inspire others.
You start by committing yourself to doing a few good deeds for the benefit of society every now and then. You decide to prioritize daily choices that are better for you and society as a whole.
Your friends, relatives, neighbors, and colleagues see your example and think “Hey… There are good people in the world…”, and they too are motivated to do a few good deeds every now and then.
A small percentage of people who make considerate choices and act to better society form in your social circle. Moreover, they don’t even seem to be upending their lives by doing that — proving that dedicating a little amount of time and effort to bettering society is possible. Like we always did so before.
Other people in your larger community see this, and they start thinking that it’s not only something that is doable, but also it’s pretty ‘usual’.
Suddenly, sparing a little effort for bettering society without upending one’s life not only becomes something that is achievable, but it also becomes something ‘normal’ that ‘everybody’ does.
And with the changing perception of society, it just becomes a norm.
So you see, by spending just a little effort to change society and being committed and open about it, you can change the world.
And you don’t even need to upend your life to do it…
